A love of travel and a tendency to do things the hard way has shaped this project in to what it is today. Dan’s idea to see the world in an iconic vehicle planted the seed which has grown into “The Double Decker Adventure.”
Various classic modes of transport including the MGB roadster, Mini, London Taxi and 4x4 trucks were all considered for the expedition vehicle. Dan hit upon the idea of a Double Decker bus after spotting potential within a motley crew, parked up in a bus retirement yard. Dan has a passion for travelling and has completed several vehicle based adventures, including buying and driving a sports car across America.
As soon as Mat heard the plan he knew he had to get involved, realising this was the adventure he’d been dreaming about. Within a week they had chosen, test driven and purchased a Bristol VRT Double Decker. A new workshop was found (bigger vehicles need bigger spaces!) and the transformation from a well used bus to a bespoke expedition vehicle began.
The decision was to rebuild the bus to the same high standards as Dans classic car restorations and to create a bespoke vehicle with all household amenities, fully equipped for the task ahead.
After deciding they didn’t want to follow the conventions of overland travel Dan and Mat set their own challenges to pursue. Their goal was to turn the hard work involved in their planning and construction in to travel on their own terms, as far as is possible, uncompromised and self sufficient.
Stories of the famous Silk route, which have inspired many before us, planted images of beautiful countries and exciting cultures, inspiring our choice of route and shaping how the trip has evolved.
Two friends with a passion for travel and an interest in the unusual, A truly unique expedition vehicle, over 20,000 miles of adventure on the open road, over 25 countries to explore, plenty of people to meet and hundreds of stories to bring home.
It’s time to make the dream a reality.
